
Several chapters of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh hosted African American guest speakers to commemorate February as Black History Month. These events were opportunities for Hindu Americans to learn about the history and struggles of Black Americans in shaping their successes and challenges of today.
- Volunteers of Sri Krishna Shakha, Folsom in Sacramento, CA observed Black History Month by inviting US airforce veteran & current President of the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District, Chris Clark for a presentation. He spoke about his family’s experiences and struggles, while also emphasizing community engagement, the need for a conscious effort to learn about other cultures, and how people in power can influence building stronger communities
- Jijamata Shakha volunteers in Peoria, AZ, honored African American community leaders in a special session. Corporate leader Bridget Reeves was the chief guest. Bridget spoke about several instances of the Black Community’s contributions in the areas of innovation, science, and lesser-known fields. The session was highly interactive, and Bridget answered several questions from HSS volunteers
- Volunteers of Aadi Shakti Shakha in Harrisburg, NC celebrated Black History Month in a specially organized event. Three District Judges, a State Senator, a State House Member, and the head of the International Minority Coalition of Charlotte joined and shared their experiences with the group
Vivekananda Shakha volunteers in the Chicago, IL area invited Aurora City’s DEI officer, Clayton Muhammad, to their Annual Black History Month Lecture. Mr. Muhammad gave an inspiring talk (above video clip) on the topic “THEY ARE A.B.L.E. – Aurora’s Black Leaders of Excellence – PAST. PRESENT. POTENTIAL.” Community leaders including NILA (Naperville Interfaith Leaders Association) President Lynn Pries joined for this program.
- HSS Volunteers from Chandler and Gilbert, AZ, observed Black History Month celebrations to commemorate the African American community’s achievements and struggles. Councilmember O.D. Harris, the chief guest, spoke about the historical struggles faced by the African American community and its ongoing challenges today. He highlighted the importance of independence and equality for all and encouraged everyone to stand strong against adversity as one community. The event ended with an engaging Q&A session, where he thoughtfully answered questions from the audience.
- Lathrop River Island Shakha in San Joaquin CA observed the Black History month. Paul Akinjo, Mayor City of
Lathrop, Stephen Sealy – Chief of Police at the City of Lathrop & Councilwoman Jennifer Torres-O’Callaghan joined as the guest of honor Mr. Akinjo said “Our strength is in our Diverse Communities coming together to Celebrate Body, Mind and Soul, to promote Peace and lifting up our Voices Together!!! Thank you.” Mr. Sealy quoted “It was an incredible opportunity to share the rich legacy of African American contributions to the military and law enforcement. From the bravery of the Tuskegee Airmen to the trailblazing African American officers who shaped law enforcement, their courage and dedication continue to inspire us all. Grateful for the chance to engage with such a wonderful group in celebrating history, unity, and service.” Councilwoman Jennifer Torres-O’Callaghan spoke on equity and inclusion in the community
- Kapila Shakha South Jersey Vibhag successfully hosted a Black History Month event in last Shakha. The
event featured two distinguished guest speakers from the Black community: Ms. Tashawna smith a diplomat and economic advisor federal government and Ms. McCoy, an assemblywoman. The speakers shared their personal journeys, remembering the racial discrimination they faced in their early years and how they overcame challenges to achieve success in their respective fields. Their inspiring stories highlighted the importance of perseverance, education, and strong family values.
